Every Rock

In 1986, Halley's Comet returned to the inner solar system for the first time in seventy-six years. It had been seen by the Babylonians, recorded in the Bayeux Tapestry, watched by Mark Twain on the night he was born and the night he died. It had been circling the sun since before anyone thought to write anything down. It was visible from Earth because the universe it traveled through was ordered to a precision that staggers the imagination — a precision I would not learn about for another twenty years, but that was already holding every atom in place while a four-year-old looked up.

I was four years old. I did not know any of that. What I knew was that it was nighttime, and I was outside, and my whole family was with me. We were standing in the backyard of our house in Grand Prairie, Texas, looking south toward the horizon. Someone pointed, and I looked where they pointed, and I saw — something. A smudge. A blur. A faint mark on the sky that the adults around me seemed to think mattered. I have almost no memories from that age. But I have this one. Not the comet itself — I barely registered what it was. What I remember is the feeling. The night air. The adults quiet for once, all looking at the same piece of sky. The sense that something was happening that was bigger than me, bigger than our yard, bigger than anything I had a word for.

I was conscious. I did not have that word yet, but that is what I was. A small, breathing, aware thing, standing on a rock hurtling through space at sixty-seven thousand miles an hour, watching a chunk of ice that had been falling around the same star since before Rome or Egypt or language itself. And I felt it. Not understood it. Felt it. The weight of something vast and ancient, pressing against the edges of a four-year-old's awareness.

I felt it because I was built to feel it.

I did not know that yet. It would take me a lifetime to understand what that feeling was. A lifetime of contemplation, of philosophy turning over inside my head, of conversations with people over a cigarette, of quiet nights lying still with my eyes wide open staring straight up — deep and thankful and serene, listening for voices from the dark abyss staring back at me.

Nietzsche said that if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. He meant it as a warning. I lived it as a hope. For years I stood at the edge of that darkness, staring in, wishing something was staring back. Hoping. But hopeless.

Recognition happens slowly over years, like seeing the faint outline of barely a shape in the darkness, not knowing what it is until the light begins to illuminate it — slightly more, only ever slightly more, revealing itself at certain pivotal, paradigm-shifting points. I wanted to know what it was. Not with the vocabulary I would have later — not cosmology, not consciousness, not God — but with the wordless, wide-open want of a child who has just been shown that the universe is enormous and has not yet been told it is empty. Every step I took toward it was just the act of remembering what I already knew was there in the darkness, just beyond sight.

This is the story of those pivotal lessons. And how I found the words to describe what was there all along.

In my early twenties I was sitting on a bunk in Hutchins State Jail, dealing with the accumulated wreckage of those rough teenage years. Hutchins was a seventy-five man cell. Open showers. Open toilets. The smell was permanent — sweat and disinfectant and something underneath both that you never got used to. Food came on giant padded trays, served on stainless steel tables bolted to the floor. You ate what they gave you, when they gave it to you, next to whoever happened to be sitting there. Gangs ran the politics. Violence was not an event — it was the weather. Razor blades appeared and disappeared. Blood showed up on the floor and got mopped. Fights broke out over nothing and ended over nothing, and the next day everyone acted like it hadn't happened because that was how you survived.

Jailhouse preachers worked the room. They annoyed me. Men who had found Jesus between their sentencing and their bunk assignment, suddenly full of answers for everyone around them. I wanted nothing to do with it. I was not on a spiritual retreat. I was not at a monastery seeking wisdom. I was in jail, carrying the weight of choices I had made when I had no foundation under me and no one holding the rails.

Someone gave me a book. It was called Darwin's Black Box, by Michael Behe. I had not asked for it. I do not remember who handed it to me. But I read it.

And the room went quiet. Not actually quiet — the noise never stopped in Hutchins. The shouting, the toilets, the preachers, the television bolted to the wall that no one could agree on. But somewhere between the second and third chapter, I stopped hearing any of it. The seventy-five men around me faded. The smell faded. The fear in my chest went still. There was only the page in front of me, and a voice rising off of it that did not sound like religion. It sounded like engineering.

Behe was drawing diagrams in my head. Machines. Structures so small no human eye could see them, but so precise they looked engineered — spinning, interlocking, alive. I could see them — not on the page, but on the walls of the cell, projected there by something in my mind that had been waiting for this information the way a lock waits for a key. The data was alive. The diagrams were moving. Something was spinning in front of me while men played dominoes ten feet away, and I was somewhere else entirely — inside the machinery of life itself, watching it work, understanding for the first time that this was not an accident.

Behe's argument was about what he called irreducible complexity. He examined the molecular machinery inside living cells — structures like the bacterial flagellum, a literal rotary motor made of protein, complete with a stator, rotor, drive shaft, and universal joint — and asked a question that I had never heard anyone ask before: could this have been built one piece at a time by an undirected process? His answer was no. And he explained why with a precision that did not feel like religion. It felt like engineering.

The argument is straightforward. Some biological systems require multiple interdependent parts to function at all. Remove any single component and you do not get a degraded version of the system — you get nothing. No function whatsoever. A mousetrap with four out of five parts does not catch mice poorly. It does not catch mice at all. And natural selection — the engine that supposedly built all of life's complexity — can only preserve things that already work. It cannot select for a system that has no function until all its parts are present simultaneously.

The bacterial flagellum has approximately forty protein components. It spins at up to seventeen thousand RPM. It can reverse direction in a quarter turn. And every one of those components is necessary for the motor to function at all.

But I want to be honest about something, because it matters for the shape of this story: I was not sitting on that bunk with confirmation bias. At that time I was laughing at people who believed in God, especially Christians. And then Behe's book landed in my hands and I could not find a flaw in the argument.

The materialist explanation for the origin of life, when you trace it all the way back — past the amino acids, past the minerals, past the water — is that a rock got wet. The consensus-science explanation for your existence is that a rock got wet and eventually wrote Shakespeare. A mousetrap says otherwise.

Life was designed. And here is what I need you to understand about where this left me: intelligent design proves a designer. It does not prove God. The flagellum could have been built by aliens. The cell could be the product of a simulation. The designer could be a physicist in another dimension who does not know or care that we exist. Irreducible complexity gets you to this was intentional. It does not get you to this was love.

I left state jail convinced that life was designed. I was not convinced it was designed by someone who gives a damn about me. The seed was planted. But a seed is not a tree. And for seven more years, I would water it with nothing.

Dr. James Tour. Rice University. One of the most cited chemists in the world — over eight hundred publications, over a hundred and thirty patents. A man who built molecules for a living, who understood the chemistry of life at a level I never would and never pretended to. And in the videos I watched, he did something I had never seen a scientist do: he dismantled abiogenesis — the claim that life arose from non-living chemistry — without saying a single word about God. He did not preach. He did not wave a Bible. He did not appeal to faith or feelings or anything I had learned to distrust. He stood in front of audiences and said: show me the mechanism. Show me how you get from simple molecules to a living cell. Show me the pathway. And when they could not — when no one could, because no one has — he said so, plainly, the way a scientist says so when the data does not support the conclusion.

Then I saw the video where he said: if you do not believe this, text me. It shocked me. Not the content — the invitation. Because suddenly the top guy, the one I respected precisely because he was not a sensationalist, was making a claim I did not expect. He was not just presenting evidence. He was offering himself. Personally. To strangers. To anyone watching. And I wanted to know what he was selling. Or prove that he would not respond.

I emailed him. I did not email him looking for God. I emailed him looking for a crack in his credibility. I wanted to catch him not meaning it.

He called me back.

Not an assistant. Not a form letter. James Tour, on the phone, talking to me. And the first thing he did was tell me his story. November 7, 1977. Room 1812, Barnes Dormitory. He was a young man with an addiction that had consumed him. He had met a football player in the laundry room. That football player invited him to a Bible study. And in room 1812, Tour gave his life to Christ. He told me this — all of it — without flinching. A man with eight hundred publications and the respect of the global chemistry community told a stranger about his darkest years and the night Jesus showed up in a dormitory room. Because he was showing me something: this religion is for sinners. Not the cleaned-up. Not the respectable. Christ died for the ungodly, Tour said.

Then he asked me about William. He used my son's name. He said: what would you do, Jon, if William was in the yard and a big dog came running at him? I said I would put myself between William and the dog. "That is what God did," Tour said. "He demonstrates his love toward us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Then he walked me through the evidence I had been avoiding for thirteen years. Twelve extrabiblical sources for Jesus of Nazareth. The crucifixion performed by Roman soldiers — professionals who knew how to kill a man and whose careers depended on doing it correctly. Thomas, who would not believe until his hand was in the wound — a skeptic, like me. Five hundred witnesses to the resurrection, reported by Paul within years of the event, when most of those witnesses were still alive to be questioned.

And then Tour told me about Tacitus, and something inside me broke.

Tacitus was a Roman senator and historian — not a Christian, not a sympathizer, not a man with any reason to exaggerate. He was writing the official history of Rome. And he recorded that Nero, after the great fire of 64 AD, blamed the Christians and subjected them to what Tacitus called the most exquisite tortures. He described a vast multitude of people who were arrested, convicted, and executed. And here is what hit me, sitting on that phone with Tour: some of those people were related to each other. Families. Parents and children. Brothers and sisters. Which means some of them watched their relatives tortured to death in front of them — covered in animal skins and torn apart by dogs, crucified, set on fire as human torches to light Nero's gardens — and then faced the same choice themselves.

All they had to do — the only thing required to stop the torture, to save themselves, to save their children — was say they had not seen Jesus alive after his death. Just say it. Say you made it up. And not only would the torture stop — they would have been rewarded. Not one of them did.

People do not die for lies they know are lies. That is not a theological claim. That is a claim about human nature, and it is one of the most reliable observations in the history of our species.

"I have these conversations regularly," Tour told me. "Most of them are educated people. And I watch them go from not believing in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ to believing in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ in a thirty-minute conversation. How do you think that happens?"

I tried to answer. He said: "I will tell you how I think it happens. The truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ has been written on their heart already. It is already there. All I am asking them to do is to confess to the truth that is already there." Then he said: "And you know how I know the truth is already on your heart, Jon?" "Because I emailed you," I said.

"That's right."

I broke. The ever-receding bubble of my own doubt — the thing I had carried and protected and reinforced for over twenty years — popped. And truth and justice and love and a feeling that can never be conveyed in any language by anyone rushed into the void to fill it. With an impact that still rings like a bell.

He asked me to pray with him. It was December 18, 2021. I had fought this for over twenty years. I had turned every rock I could find, and under every single one of them the same face had been waiting, and I had spent two decades telling myself it was not there.

Tour prayed. And I repeated after him. Lord Jesus. Forgive me because I am a sinner. Thank you for dying for my sins. I believe Jesus is Lord. And I believe that he has risen from the dead. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. And use me for your glory. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

"Jon, I want you to write down this date," Tour said. "December 18th."

I did not need to write it down. I will never forget it.

I want to tell you what the last several chapters actually cost.

Not intellectually. The intellectual part is just following the thread. One deduction leads to the next and you either have the patience to follow it or you do not. That part does not cost anything except time and the willingness to sit with discomfort when the logic takes you somewhere you did not expect.

What it actually costs is harder to say.

My friends do not do this.

They want to be happy. They want to raise their families well and be surrounded by good people and go to church on Sunday and talk about football on Monday and be successful and do fun things and laugh and live. And I mean that without a single note of condescension — that is a genuinely good life. A full life. A life I have watched from a certain distance for as long as I can remember and wanted the warmth of without being able to stop doing the thing that keeps me standing slightly outside it.

I have never been interested in fun things. Not the way other people are. I would rather sit on the floor by myself with my head in my hands, rocking, thinking about the nature of reality, than do almost anything else I can name. I do not say that proudly. It is not a boast. It is simply the most honest description I have of what I am.

And it has cost me.

Right now, working through these ideas, the room contains a poodle, a German Shepherd, and a television on which a historian is talking about Franklin Roosevelt and the step-by-step process by which technology built itself — the telegraph to the railroad to the telephone to the thing in your hand right now — each one impossible without the one before it. Each one a deduction made physical. The room does not contain a circle of friends wanting to hear what I have been thinking about. That circle has never quite formed around me. The floor has always been easier to find than the table.

I am not telling you this for sympathy. I am telling you this because it belongs in the account.

The sphere, the triangle, the Logos in the tetrahedra, Einstein refusing to pick the rock up — none of that came from a comfortable place. It came from the floor. From the specific shape of a mind that cannot leave a question alone, that will follow a thread past the point where normal social life resumes, that finds the nature of reality more pressing than the football score and has never been entirely sure whether that is a gift or a damage or both wearing the same face.

I think it is both.

The loneliness and the work are not separate things. They are the same thing. The same wiring that makes the connection harder is the wiring that builds the sphere. You cannot have one without the other. I have tried. The floor is always there at the end of the trying.

But here is what I know from the other side of all of it.

The floor is where the deduction happens. The floor is where the rocks get turned over. The floor is where you are close enough to the ground to notice what everyone standing upright walks past without seeing.

And somewhere ahead — I believe this, I have to believe this — there are people who have been on their own floor. Who did the rocking and the thinking and paid the same price and felt the same specific kind of lonely that does not have a clean fix. Who followed the thread past where the football game resumed and found themselves in the dark with the same questions I could not leave alone.

This book is for them.

Not for the people who are already comfortable. Not for the people who never needed the argument because the faith came easy. For the ones on the floor. The ones who need it to be true and need even more for it to actually hold up when you push on it.

It holds.

I pushed on everything I could find.

Every rock.

Years of pushing.

It holds.

Get up off the floor.

I will show you.

I did not go looking for this.

The last chapter was about pi — about the irrational constants being relationships rather than quantities, and about what that means for the limits of mathematical description. I thought that was the insight. I thought the chapter was done. Then I started doing math. Not to prove anything. Just to see what was there.

What follows was not constructed. It was found. I ran the numbers, followed the connections, and watched the results come in. I am going to show you what I found, step by step, so you can verify every piece of it yourself. None of this requires advanced mathematics. It requires arithmetic, one famous equation, and the willingness to look at what the arithmetic says.

Begin with nothing. Zero. The state before anything exists.

Add unity. One. A single identity, alone. God before creation, if the framework is correct. Undifferentiated oneness.

Now let unity relate to itself. One plus one equals two. The first other. The first thing that is not the original one. Already, by the second step, relationship has produced something new.

Now continue. Let each new number be the sum of the previous two. Let each term be the relationship between what came before:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144…

This is the Fibonacci sequence. It starts from nothing, passes through unity, and iterates pure relationship. Each term is defined entirely by its relation to the previous two. Nothing else is added. No external input. Just relation, iterating on itself.

Now divide each term by the one before it. Watch the ratio converge: 2.000… 1.500… 1.666… 1.600… 1.625… 1.619… 1.6180…

It converges to 1.6180339887…, the golden ratio. Phi. The number that appears in sunflower spirals, nautilus shells, galaxy arms, DNA helices, and the proportions of the human face.

Nobody put it there. You start with nothing, add unity, let relationship iterate, and the golden ratio emerges on its own. You do not need to install it. Relationship produces it. It is what relating does.

The golden ratio has a property that no other number has.

Phi squared equals phi plus one. The golden ratio multiplied by itself equals itself plus one. No other number does this.

Read that in the framework. If phi represents the Creator, then self-relation — the Creator relating to Himself — produces Himself plus something new. Self-relation generates a plus one. The act of relating to yourself necessarily produces an other. Creation is not a separate decision. It is the consequence of self-relation.

There is more. Phi minus one equals one over phi. Subtract unity from the whole and you get the whole’s relationship to itself. Giving up part of yourself equals relating to yourself. Self-limitation is self-relation. Tzimtzum is love. Not as a metaphor. As algebra.

Now for the equation that changed everything.

In 1748, Leonhard Euler published what is now called the most beautiful equation in mathematics:

e to the power of i times pi, plus one, equals zero.

Five constants. The growth constant e, the imaginary unit i, the geometric constant pi, unity, and zero. They appear in one equation, and the equation equals nothing. Mathematicians have called it beautiful for nearly three centuries. Nobody has adequately explained why.

Here is what the framework says.

Continuous growth, rotated through the relational dimension by the full measure of the distance from self to other, arrives at the negation of unity. Add one — restore unity — and you return to zero. Nothing. Perfect balance. The state before creation.

Now read it backward.

Zero exists. Nothing. Perfect balance. Remove the one. Break the balance. Let the negation of unity stand on its own. The space that is not God exists.

That is creation.

I need to show you what the complex plane looks like.

It has two axes. The horizontal axis is the real number line. The vertical axis is the imaginary number line — the domain of relationship, of the dimension that quantity cannot reach. They intersect at right angles. At the origin. At zero.

They form a cross.

At the center of the cross: nothing. The point where the real and the imaginary meet. The point where quantity and relationship intersect. The point where the material and the immaterial cross each other.

The path of creation goes over the cross.

The cross is not an afterthought in the geometry of reality. It is the geometry.

I did not put it there.

Fourteen things fell out of the math. None of them were put there. The math knew before we did. And it has been trying to tell us. In the only language it has. A language of quantities, straining against its own limits to express something that is not a quantity. Writing infinite decimals that never arrive because the thing they are describing is a relationship that cannot be collapsed to a point.

Under every rock I have turned in this book, the same face was waiting. I did not expect to find it in the complex plane. I did not expect to find it in an equation written in 1748 by a Swiss mathematician who was going blind. I did not expect to find the cross in coordinate geometry or the Trinity in the irrational constants or the creation account in five symbols on a blackboard.

But there it is. Verify it yourself. The math is public. The equation is checkable. The cross is at the origin. The golden ratio is self-referential. Every piece of it can be confirmed by anyone with a calculator and the willingness to look.

Turn the rock.
